The demand for small and affordable housing in the Sunshine Coast Hinterland is at an all-time high. The CHASM Housing Sponsorship Program supports The Small House Project, aimed at helping locals struggling to find somewhere to live.
We are seeking Sponsorship for our latest innovative project, The Small House Project.  Using relocatable homes on long-term leases, the project will provide low-cost housing for up to ten small households in the Hinterland.
The completed project will help people facing homelessness and unable to remain living in their communities due to a lack of affordable housing.

CHASM Housing formed in April 2016 to address the demand for affordable housing in the Sunshine Coast Hinterland and advocate for affordable housing solutions across the region. We envisage a compassionate and sustainable community where everyone has a home they can afford.  We are committed to developing and implementing sustainable solutions that will increase the supply of small and affordable houses in the Sunshine Coast Hinterland.

CHASM Housing has developed The Small House Project, a model for affordable housing (‘The Maleny Model’) that can be replicated by other regional towns seeking to tackle homelessness head-on. Regional towns can benefit from building and owning their own ‘affordable housing’ assets, leasing them to suitable tenants at affordable rates on leased land, (public or private), within Council regulations. The Small House Project aims to take pressure off social housing and increase security of tenure. Revenues will maintain properties and leases, making it a truly sustainable affordable housing model.

In 2017, CHASM Housing initiated a 3-year strategic business plan for affordable housing in the Sunshine Coast Hinterland. This plan has been designed to ensure CHASM Housing increases its status and continues to grow on all levels, including a community sponsorship drive. Our Sponsorship Package has been designed to give businesses the opportunity for cost-effective promotion and marketing of their business.

Utilising small (or ‘Tiny’) houses as a means to positively impact affordable housing is a hot topic and an important part of the future Sunshine Coast lifestyle. Why not use it to increase your brand awareness?

Homeless Statistics:

Number of Homeless in Australia
The 105,000 homeless figure frequently quoted by government is based on 2011 ABS figures. The Mission Australia’s Specialist Homelessness Services 2015–16 report showed that figure at almost 280,000 and rising. More than one third are teenagers and young adults (aged 12-25), with single women over 55 being the fastest growing group, with 85,000 women supported by specialist homelessness services in the past year.

Tight Rental Market
The Sunshine Coast Hinterland has one of the tightest rental markets in Queensland, with a vacancy rate of 0.9% (2016) a drop from 9.4% in 2011, demonstrating a rapid shift in the Hinterland rental market over a five-year period. This is causing multiple issues with regard to affordable housing. There has also been much local speculation that the Airbnb phenomenon has
been a major disruptor to Hinterland rental supply.

Comparative Social Housing Costs
Government expenditure for social housing for one household far exceeds that of the CHASM Housing Small House Project – estimated at $50k per home. The Department of Housing dwellings cost over $250,000 each (2010-11 figures) while Maroochydore Housing Centre paid $392,000 per house (2010-11).
